Juggling

I have a million things on my mind and a million things to do, but here I am writing a post for a blog that hasn't been updated since October. I'm trying not to think about the pile of dirty dishes in my sink, the dog hair and potting soil on my kitchen floor, the bleach stain on the hall carpet (thanks, Jordan), and the layer of dust on the end tables. Despite all that, when I get home tonight, I'll most likely cook dinner, play with my son until bath and bed time, and then fall asleep watching Project Runway while Patrick plays video games. Let's not even mention the laundry...oops. My brain is tired. I keep repeating to myself, "It's a good thing to quietly hope." To hope for God's direction. To hope that He will make all things good. His mercy endures forever. Isn't that what David kept saying?

Some pics from this weekend...

Little man is not a fan of grass. My mom had a fun time reminding me I was the same way as a kid.

Lunch at J. Clyde. They had a special St. Patrick's Day menu. Jordan loved the black eyed pea hummus and the Shepherd's Pie.

St. Patrick's Day Parade in Birmingham

Funny story...Halfway through the parade, the cars just stopped coming. Couldn't figure out the problem for a while. Turns out the driver from a local brewery kept getting out of his car to buy souvenirs. He held up the whole parade for a couple of green hats.  Birmingham police finally had to tell him to get moving. Honestly...it was the most interesting part other than the Alabama Ghostbusters

He fell asleep with about 15 minutes left to go. The Fire trucks didn't even phase him.

Happy Halloween

My family has never been big on Halloween. We always went trick or treating, but never really decorated. My mom kept a hodge podge of Halloween items in a box in the garage like a witch hat, a foam pumpkin,  and a few random toys. We also had a collection of candy buckets from McDonald's, and I vaguely remember having some of these nugget guys...

Anyway. It doesn't seem that my new family is going to be participating too much in Halloween either unless it relates in some way to the church's fall festival. I did dress Little Man as festively as possible this morning. Note the Yoda hat, Pumpkin outfit and monster bib.

He'll be wearing his Koala outfit tonight, which was leftover from my mom's Australian themed birthday party. Stay warm out there!

Crafty Fun

The church's fall festival is this Saturday, and somehow I agreed to lead two craft sessions for kids. I know it will be fun, but I hate being chipper at 9am on a Saturday morning. Then again, the event starts at 8am, and I've got to be there anyway.  There are two requirements for the craft. One, it must be cheap, because we are not charging for it. Two, it must be appropriate for multiple age levels.  Also we have no idea how many kids will show up or if they will show up during the set time frames (9am or 10am). So here are a few ideas I'm toying with. I'll share whatever I decide next week.

Clay Ornaments - I've seen recipes using salt/flour or cornstarch/baking soda. I figured the kids could make shapes or designs, and I could send them home with instructions on how to bake it.

Snow Flakes - We made these with a Girl Scout group last year, and they turned out great. It's all in the way you fold the paper, and maya*made has a great tutorial.

Magazine Christmas Trees - this project turns out great, but it takes a while for little ones to really figure out the folds. The Martha Stewart tutorial adds spray paint and glitter, but they look pretty cool without the extra stuff. Watching the video really helped me figure out the folds.

Ever made any of these? I've done all of them at one point or another.

Introductions

I believe that introductions are in order...I'm Trista. My mom named me that because she was a school teacher and didn't want to name me anything she'd heard before. My name comes from the Latin word for sad. Thanks, mom. No, really, I'm not sad, and I do like my name. Moving on...

I work for the Girl Scouts (no, I cannot get you cookies. no, I was not a Girl Scout as a child.), and my husband and I are youth pastors at our church. Before we got married, we agreed that I would be a co-youth pastor, not a youth pastor's wife. I hate that type of introduction: "Hello, I'm the youth pastor...and this is my wife." Hello, I'm at the church every night of the week too!

Patrick is the hubby. Carpet Cleaning master sales person during the work day, hubby and youth pastor every other second. He's a great story teller, which is probably why he is such a great youth pastor. He's the type who can make any activity the most fun thing you've ever done in your life. Really.

I've known Patrick since I was a kid. Became friends with him when I was 15 (he was 20, yikes! That's another story altogether.). We dated for almost 5 years and got married in 2009.

Yoda is a Jack Chi, we think, with more Chi than Jack. Believe it or not, I found him at a theme park. He's the grumpy, old man of the house.

Roxy is dog number two. She's a 40 pound Dalmation/Pitbull mix. She's named after the Police Song, because Patrick and I have a fascination with it. Roxy is also a rescue, who was found behind a dumpster. She's as goofy as they come, and I apologize in advance if you ever come over to our house, because she WILL jump on you as soon as you enter the room. We're working on it. Since she will never sit still long enough for a decent picture to be taken, here's a video. (By the way, I could write a whole post on why that massive TV was sitting in front of our fire place.)

This little guy is the newest addition to our family. He's pretty much the cutest and most fabulous person ever.
He has brought a remarkable amount of joy to our lives, and being a parent is basically the coolest job ever.

Sew Cool

I need to learn to sew. My mom can sew. My grandmother can sew. My mother-in-law can sew. My great-grandmother could sew. It's time for me to learn.

My mom and I had great plans for her to teach me to sew while I was on maternity leave. Then I found out how difficult it is to do anything when you have a 4 inch incision in your abdomen (thank you, cesarean) and a 10 pound infant who enjoys being held.

The Friday before I went back to work, my mom was on her way to meet me at Hobby Lobby to pick out patterns to make Jordan an outfit. Before I walked out the door, I checked my temperature because I wasn't feeling well. An hour later I was leaving the doctor's office, diagnosed with strep (which Patrick also had), and my mom watched Jordan for the rest of the night while I laid around feeling sorry for myself. At least I got to watch the Open Ceremony of the London Olympics uninterruped.

Today Spoonflower proved to me that I have to learn to sew ASAP. Nancy shared her latest sewing project on her blog Owen's Olivia, and now I can't wait to make a cloth book for Jordan. Here's the fabric/pattern...

To the Circus!!!

I also can't wait to tell Patrick I want to spend my next paycheck on specialty fabrics from Spoonflower. The fabrics are essentially pre-printed projects that you just cut out and sew together. I found baby books, stockings, plushies, and even a Halloween candy sorter. Here are a few that I'm drooling over...

Things to Count at the Circus: A Cloth Book

Incredible Super Heroes set

The UnTouchables! - Plushie
Trick Or Treat Candy Sorter Plushie

Jack o

AND MY FAVORITE (if you click through to this one, there are also cupcakes, crackers, a cutting board, potholders and more)...

Kawaii Kitchen - plushie toy set

Of course Spoonflower also has lovely fabrics that generous designers have uploaded for all of us to use, but I can't wait to make some plushies!

fyi, this post was not sponsored by Spoonflower.

Break It Down...Baby Gear

There is a lot of baby gear out there. Here's the advice I will give you, my friend, based on my 4 months of experience. Obviously I'm not an expert. Just a new mom who wants to write a blog.

Bouncer
The Bouncer has been invaluable to me. Need to take a shower? Put the baby in the bouncer. Need to cook dinner? Put the baby in the bouncer. Want to let the dogs lick the baby's feet? Put the baby in the bouncer? We registered for this bouncer, and we use it every day. Little Man didn't interact with it for the first month, so I thought it wasn't going to be a good purchase, but he loves it now. I like the one we've got, because the toys can be removed when it's time to go to sleep. These contraptions are great, because they don't take up a ton of room, and they are portable. Easily fits in the PT Cruiser alongside the car seat and stroller. We're still using this at 4-months-old.

Good to know: For the first two months, the thing doesn't bounce unless you make it bounce.  By month three, Little Man had learned to bounce himself.

Activity Gym
Memaw bought Little Man one of these. For the first couple of months, I kept thinking the baby HAD to be bored. Unless we were holding him, all he did was lay there. He couldn't hold toys, he couldn't watch tv, all he ate was milk...so I begged my mom to let me have the activity gym she had bought for her house. It's kind of like this, but older. She bought it at a consignment sale. Positives? They are portable, colorful, and easily stored. Negatives? Little Man hated laying on it the first couple of months. Turns out he wasn't bored. He did just want to be held. He likes it a little more now, so we take it to the sitter's house so he'll have something to do.

Boppy
Couldn't have lived without the Boppy during the first four months. It saved my arms while Little Man and I were learning to breastfeed. I can do without it now, but choose not to. Here's a picture of the little guy laying in it the way the label says not to. Sorry for the terrible quality.

Someone gave me a My Breast Friend pillow, but I never used it. I like how soft the Boppy is. Plus I didn't want to have to strap myself into a pillow every time I needed to feed the baby, which is a lot those first few weeks.

Tummy Triangle
A dear friend bought Little Man this right off my registry. In theory, it's a great item. In practice, baby hates it. Baby doesn't like tummy time, and this triangle thing just reminds him how much he hates it. Verdict: Skip it.

Swing
We were given a used swing. Ours is a basic model, and it must be a few years old, because I can't find anything like it online. This is the closest I can find. It came in handy for the first month. We could put him in the swing any time he cried, and he would instantly calm down. It was the only way I got the dishes washed while on maternity leave. I don't think it's a major necessity though. He's 17 weeks today, and I don't think we'll ever really use it again. If you don't have a lot of room, skip the swing. I'm glad we didn't purchase one.

Jumperoo/ExerSaucer
At 3 months, Little Man started to need a little more interaction and mobility, which we found in this thing. If you've got room for it, get one! They aren't exactly cheap, but I'm sure you can find a used one that's like new. We received a previously owned one from a friend.

Good to know: They aren't exactly portable, which my husband learned when he tried to move it from my son's room to the living room. We basically replaced the swing with this once he could hold his head up on his own.

Doorway Jumper
If you don't have room for the Jumperoo, get one of these. Little Man loves it as you can see in the picture. We ended up with two. The one in the picture has no frills, but it's light and super portable. We leave this one at the sitter's house, since I'm obviously not going to carry the Jumperoo back and forth. Watch out for the weight limit on these (this one is 24lbs.). Once he starts walking, I don't think we'll be able to use it anymore. We just took it out of the box two weeks ago (15-weeks-old).

We were also given a used one similar to this that we keep at home. It lights up and Little Man loves it. The thing can move from room to room with me while I'm cleaning, getting ready for work, watching Netflix with the hubby...

Play Yard
This pic was taken just a few weeks after Little Man came home. (Roxy tried to reach the baby but was denied, thank you very much.) We received the Safety 1st Play Yard as a gift.

(Side Note: Play Yard is the official name, Pack 'N Play is Graco's brand name. Kind of like Kleenex and Band Aid.)

I'm glad we have this. It's basically become a piece of furniture in our living room. Many of my friends with kids keep one in their bedroom, but since we had a cradle, we use it in the Living Room. We're using it less and less as he gets older, since he doesn't have to sleep as much. If you don't have a lot of room, you could skip this one and just use your crib. They are fairly portable (just don't try to break it down quickly), so if you travel a lot, I would recommend it. Then again, ours hasn't moved from the living room, so don't take my word on it...

Bumbo
I've heard rave reviews about this crazy thing, but short of this great photo opp, Little Man won't sit in it long enough for me to see the point. Maybe he's still too young. I'm sure we'll start using it more when he starts eating solids.

We ended up with two of these (one new, one borrowed/used), and, no, I did not pay attention to the recall, because I think it is ridiculous. Both of my Bumbo's are belt-less. Good lord, of course you're baby is going to get a fractured skull if you leave him unattended on the kitchen counter. Can we all get a little bit of sense?

What did I miss? These are the entertainers we use on a regular basis.
